Paraplegia following spinal surgery in which somato sensory evoked potential had remained normal, illustrates the limitations of the SEP as the monitor of the entire spinal cord. SEP travels principally in the dorsal column, dorsal spinocerebellar tracts and anterolateral spino thalamic tracts, which are predominantly supplied by the posterior spinal artery. The area supplied by the anterior spinal artery might go undetected, i.e, the anterior two thirds of the spinal cord, which includes the motor tracts.
